Turkey’s Supreme Electoral Council (YSK) said Monday that more than 60 million people are expected to vote in the general and presidential elections scheduled for May 14.
The country’s electoral authorities have indicated that the figure is estimated at 60.7 million people, of which some 3.4 million will exercise their right to vote from abroad.
YSK President Ahmet Yener said in a statement that Turks living abroad will be able to send in their votes on April 27, next week. The younger population is expected to play an important role in the elections.
In this sense, the authorities have explained that around 5 million people will vote for the first time, according to information gathered by the newspaper ‘Daily Sabah’.
They also explained that more details will be provided later on how the voting will be carried out in the regions devastated by the February 6 earthquakes, which left more than 50,000 dead and millions of people affected.
According to official figures, more than 3.7 million people have left the affected areas, but only 133,000 of them have reportedly registered to vote in other provinces.
