The Iranian government has condemned the sanctions agreed on Monday by EU foreign ministers and has anticipated that there will be new «effective» retaliatory measures, which will foreseeably involve an expansion of the ‘blacklist’ of European individuals and entities inside the Islamic Republic.

The Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman, Naser Kanani, has labeled the EU measures as illegal and interventionist, affecting in its latest package the Minister of the Interior and the state-owned Press TV, among other targets.

The EU-27 thus respond to the repression during the protests over the death of the young Mahsa Amini, who died after being arrested for wearing the veil incorrectly. They also condemned the sending of drones to Russia for subsequent use in the war in Ukraine, although Iran has never acknowledged this.

Tehran vows to act on the basis of «its national honor and interests,» according to Kanani, so it «reserves the right» to respond against both the EU and the UK, which has also acted along similar lines, the Mehr news agency reports.
