The Swedish Armed Forces have started on Monday the largest military maneuvers on Swedish territory for 30 years in the framework of its possible accession to NATO, a process blocked for months due to Turkey’s reluctance.
The military exercise, known as Aurora 23, will involve nearly 26,000 military personnel from countries such as the United States, the United Kingdom, Norway, Germany and France. The maneuvers will be carried out until May 11, mainly in the south of the country and on the island of Gotland.
The Swedish Armed Forces have issued a statement on Monday urging the population not to obstruct the columns of military vehicles. »You may overtake a military column as long as you do not obstruct or disturb it,» reads one of the recommendations.
The exercise, which includes maneuvers on land as well as in the air and sea, will involve the Swedish Army, Navy, Air Force and Home Guard. Specifically, there will be flights with fighter planes and helicopters, as well as take-offs and landings from various military bases and airports. There will also be naval maneuvers with warships in the Baltic Sea.
