Mexico’s Public Prosecutor’s Office has again charged former Attorney General Jesús Murillo Karam, this time for an alleged crime of torture against Felipe Rodríguez Salgado, alias ‘El Cepillo’, one of the Guerreros Unidos hitmen who participated in the disappearance and murder of the 43 Ayotzinapa student teachers.
Murillo Karam has been detained since August 2022. He is the first high-level politician to be arrested and charged for the 2014 disappearance of these students, who after attending a protest were harassed and killed by local police in collusion with criminal groups.
For this crime, Murillo Karam was charged with the crimes of torture, forced disappearance and falsification of documents, in which he would have incurred to fabricate the so-called »historical truth», the version of the Government to hide the participation of several State structures in what happened.
In the case of «El Cepillo», the Prosecutor’s Office maintains that he was tortured during the interrogations so that he would corroborate the official version and proof of this is a recording in which the hitman appears in a room handcuffed and hooded, being threatened by the former director of the Criminal Investigation Agency (AIC), Tomás Zerón de Lucio, currently a fugitive from justice.
