NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg made a surprise trip to Kiev on Thursday on his first visit to Ukraine since the start of Russian military aggression 14 months ago.
A spokesman for the Atlantic Alliance confirmed to Europa Press that Stoltenberg is in Ukraine on Thursday, without providing further details at the moment about the agenda he will have during his visit to the country.
Until now, NATO had avoided the image of the secretary general in Ukraine and there has not been a photograph of Stoltenberg with the Ukrainian president, Volodimir Zelenski, because of the possible implications in the context of the war, although the foreign and defense ministers have participated in meetings at NATO headquarters in Brussels.
This visit comes a day before he takes part in the meeting at Ramstein Air Base, Germany, of the Contact Group for Ukraine, the 50-nation coalition that is militarily assisting Ukraine in the face of the Russian invasion.
