Five soldiers have been killed in Borno state in northeastern Nigeria after their vehicle drove over a mine in the area near the border with Niger.
As reported by ‘Ripples Nigeria’, the soldiers were on patrol in the village of Laayi, near the border town of Damasak, when they drove over a mine which, according to initial ivnvestigations, may have been planted by the Islamic State in West Africa (ISWA).
The explosion that killed the five soldiers of the patrol took place this Monday, although the news was released this Wednesday by the Nigerian authorities.
It is suspected that the jihadists were responsible because the previous day several attacks were attributed to them in the nearby village, from where, according to the above-mentioned newspaper, they had fled by placing several mines during their retreat.
Northeastern Nigeria is the scene of frequent attacks by Boko Haram and its offshoot, Islamic State in West Africa (ISWA).
