Brazil’s Federal Police opened an investigation on Sunday to determine the circumstances of an attack against members of the Yanomami community that resulted in the death of one person and the injury of two others.
When the authorities arrived at the scene, they found three injured people (24, 31 and 36 years old), so they transferred the victims to receive first aid.
However, one of them, who was shot in the head, succumbed to his injuries. The other two wounded, who are in serious condition, are hospitalized, as reported by ‘O Globo’.
Federal Police agents who have gone to the Yanomami land have indicated that the objective is not only to start investigating what happened, but also »to stop the aggressions that were still in progress».
Other efforts are still underway to identify, locate and arrest the perpetrators of the crimes committed against the indigenous people», explained the police, who point to individuals involved in illegal mining as suspects in the attack.
The Minister of Indigenous Peoples of Brazil, Sonia Guajajara, informed that an inter-ministerial committee is on its way to the area »to further reinforce the actions to disintrude the criminals».
The situation of invaders in the Yanomami lands has been going on for many years and even with all the efforts being made by the Federal Government, there are still many coordinated actions to be taken before the removal of all the invaders from the territory», she declared.
