At least 20 people, mostly minors, have died after a boat with about 30 people on board capsized in Malappuram district, in the southern Indian province of Kerala, according to the balance sheet published by the police.
There could be more victims under the hull. They have to be pulled out. The boat has capsized. We still don’t know the reason. The police are investigating,» said Kerala Sports Minister V Abdurahiman, who is in charge of coordinating the rescue operation.
He explained that the children were on an excursion during the school vacations, according to Indian television NDTV.
The incident occurred at around 7 p.m. on Sunday evening and the survivors were taken to nearby private and public hospitals.
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has already expressed his condolences for the deaths and announced compensation for the families of the deceased.
