At least five people have been arrested following protests this Saturday in the Cuban town of Caimanera, Guantanamo province, in the east of the country, according to opposition media.
Videos broadcast on social networks show members of the security forces assaulting and arresting demonstrators who were chanting slogans such as »Freedom» and »Homeland and Life», reports the Miami-based Martí Noticias television station.
Miguel Díaz-Canel’s violent forces are doing the only thing they know how to do: repress the people and violate their human rights», denounced Amnesty International.
Five people have been arrested,» said activist, journalist and Caimanera resident Yeri Curbelo, who has been able to speak directly with the families of the detainees.
Five were repressed and arrested: Felipe Correa Martínez, 26 years old; Luis Miguel Alarcón Martínez, 32 years old; Andey Pediel Matos, 31 years old; Rody Álvarez González and Raniel Álvarez González», explained Curbelo, a member of the Eastern Democratic Alliance. The mothers of these men do not know the whereabouts of their children, he said.
Curbelo said that the protest began at approximately 7 p.m. on Saturday at Carretera Street. Subsequently, the regime deployed Black Berets -the elite forces of the Cuban Army- and Red Berets -Army Prevention Troops-.
The opposition portal 14ymedio has denounced that »the protest was repressed by uniformed members of the National Special Brigade of the Ministry of the Interior known as the Black Berets, who arrested several of the demonstrators».
»Protests again. Again Internet outages. Cubans can’t take it anymore. They demand and deserve freedom and rights,» said a spokesman for the NGO Human Rights Watch, Juan Pappier.
Thus the military of the Castro dictatorship beat women and men who were peacefully protesting in Caimanera, Guantanamo, while cutting the Internet,» said activist Carolina Barrero on Twitter.
In Madrid and Barcelona, protest rallies have taken place this Sunday in front of Cuban diplomatic offices in solidarity with Caimanera.
