At least 20 people have been killed and nearly 300 injured by an earthquake measuring 5.6 on the Richter scale that struck Indonesia’s capital, Jakarta, on Monday, according to medical sources quoted by local media.
The director of the Cianjur hospital confirmed that 20 people died and 300 were admitted after the earthquake, which occurred at 13.21 hours (local time), with its epicenter ten kilometers south of the city of Cianjur, according to the Indonesian National Meteorological, Geophysical and Climatological Agency (BMKG).
According to information reported by the Indonesian television channel Kompas, the large number of injured people has caused that some of the patients are being treated in the parking lot of the hospital due to the lack of beds to treat all the victims.
For its part, the National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB) has said that the earthquake has shaken the capital, with no reports of serious damage. «Stay calm, do not panic and evacuate through the designated routes,» it has recommended through its account on the social network Twitter. The BMKG has indicated that there is no risk of tsunami.
