The Ukrainian Foreign Ministry on Tuesday confirmed talks held between Kiev and Tehran about the use of Iranian drones by Russian forces during the war.
This was made known by the Ukrainian spokesman for the Foreign Ministry, Oleg Nikolenko, in statements to the American network CNN, although he refrained from giving further details on the outcome of the conversation.
«Such a meeting of experts did take place. I cannot disclose details, but I can assure you that the Ukrainian side continues to take the most decisive measures to prevent Russia from using Iranian weapons for the war against Ukraine,» he said.
Nikolenko said that Ukraine has let Iran know that the consequences of participating in the conflict on the Russian side would be «disproportionate» to the benefits it could gain by cooperating with Russia.
Washington has denounced that Russia bought hundreds of drones on the Iranian market for use in the war, although subsequently, both the media and the Ukrainian authorities have detailed that most of the parts from which these types of weapons have been made are of European and American manufacture.
The conversation of «experts» mentioned by Nikolenko takes place in a context in which the Iranian representation to the United Nations has already requested a meeting with its Ukrainian counterpart «to assess such accusations».
According to a source of this delegation quoted by CNN, so far «important steps have been taken» in the dialogue between the experts of both countries and this will continue to be the case in order to clarify «any misunderstanding on this matter».
