Algeria’s National Assembly on Tuesday approved a new finance law for 2023 that provides for an increase in the budget line for defense in the context of recent tensions between Algiers and Morocco.

The text, which also proposes a series of measures both in terms of investment support and taxation, must now be sent to the Upper House for consideration and approval, APS news agency reported.

Specifically, the new text, which has been debated in the Assembly for several weeks, sets defense spending at $22.7 billion compared to $12 billion in previous years, the Anatolia news agency has learned.

Rabat and Algeria broke off relations in 2021 and since then their respective diplomacies have been at loggerheads, most notably over Western Sahara. The two neighboring countries regularly reproach each other over alleged misinformation and false news.
