The Ukrainian government on Friday ordered a ban on the export of firewood, assuming that it could be a key material to ensure heating for a winter that, in principle, will be marked by problems in electricity supply.

Kiev already vetoed in September the export of coal and now it has done the same with firewood. The Prime Minister, Denis Shmigal, has explained that in some areas, especially those close to the front lines, wood is already the main source of heating, according to the UNIAN agency.

Russia’s attacks on Ukraine’s energy infrastructure have led to cuts in essential supplies, including in the capital, Kiev, where as of Friday morning only a third of households had regained heating.

The mayor, Vitali Klitschko, has assured on Telegram that 400 continuously open heating points have been installed to ensure the well-being of the population. These enclaves also make it possible to recharge electronic devices such as cell phones.
