Early voting begins in second round of Georgia Senate elections

Democrats hope to consolidate their dominance in the Senate in Georgia’s runoff election to the upper chamber, which begins early voting this Saturday and pits their candidate and incumbent Raphael Warnock against Republican Herschel Walker.

A Warnock victory would give the Democrats a particularly large majority when it comes to appointing the committees responsible for ratifying the nominations to the Judiciary that President Joe Biden would like to present.

The early vote, prior to the main election to be held on December 6, is taking place thanks to the permission granted by the state Supreme Court, after the Republican Party complained that the vote could not follow the Thanksgiving holiday.

The Democratic Party responded that the law applied only to primary and general elections, and not to runoffs, as in this case.

This runoff comes after neither candidate reached the 50 percent of the vote needed for outright victory in the Nov. 8 first round. Warnock obtained 49.4 percent of the ballots, to 48.5 percent for his opponent, according to official results.
