North Korea’s Workers’ Party plans to hold a key meeting in late December for the government’s political strategy next year, which will address work plans for 2023 and a number of important issues, state media has advanced.

The meeting will be chaired by North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, who usually uses such important meetings for the future of the party to issue new security guidelines, as well as economic objectives and his stance on foreign relations, especially with Washington and Seoul.

The escalation of tensions on the Korean peninsula has been a constant throughout this year. Pyongyang has significantly increased the pace and range of its tests of ballistic missiles that can be armed with a nuclear warhead, despite United Nations resolutions prohibiting them from doing so.

Despite this, Kim recently made it clear after one of these tests that North Korea’s «ultimate goal» should be to have the most powerful nuclear force in the world.

Meanwhile, South Korea and the United States have resumed large-scale joint military exercises this year in response to North Korean missile tests.
