U.S. conspiracy theorist Alex Jones filed for personal bankruptcy Friday after a Connecticut court ordered him to pay €1.4 billion in punitive damages to the families of the victims of the 2012 Sandy Hook school shooting.
Documents collected by NBC News show that Jones has filed for bankruptcy in a Texas court and that his creditors include the parents of the 20 children killed by Adam Lanza and whom Jones described as «actors.»
An attorney for the Sandy Hook families has assured NBC that Jones’ statement will have no effect on compensating their families. «Like every other cowardly move Alex Jones has made, this bankruptcy will not work,» they have asserted.
«The bankruptcy system does not protect anyone who engages in intentional and egregious attacks on others,» said Chris Mattei, an attorney with Koskoff, Koskoff & Bieder.
Since his Infowars website was founded in 1999, Jones, who is a radio host, has had a large audience. Among the conspiracy theories he has promoted is that the 2001 attacks in New York and Washington were organized by the government.
