Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Friday demanded that the Taliban investigate and act against those responsible for the attack on the Pakistani ambassador in Kabul that left one security personnel seriously injured.

«I strongly condemn the cowardly assassination attempt on the head of Pakistan’s mission in Kabul,» Sharif wrote on his Twitter profile, where he also had words of appreciation for the «brave security guard,» Israr Mohamed, who «took a bullet to save» the ambassador, Ubaid-ur-Rehman Nizamani.

«I demand an investigation and immediate action against the perpetrators of this heinous act,» the Pakistani prime minister demanded of the government formed by the Taliban in Afghanistan.

The Pakistani Foreign Ministry on Friday denounced an attack on its embassy in Afghanistan, which targeted its ambassador, although the diplomatic representative was unharmed. The Pakistani government, one of the few that maintains official diplomatic contacts with Afghanistan, has expressed its «resounding condemnation» of what it described as an «assassination attempt».

In his first reaction to the assault, Taliban foreign spokesman Abdul Qahar Balji «strongly» condemned what had happened and wished the wounded man «a speedy recovery», while assuring that «they will never allow selfish people to compromise the security of diplomatic missions in Kabul».

«The attack was perpetrated by the common enemies of Pakistan and Afghanistan,» said the Taliban, who vowed to leave no stone unturned until they bring «the perpetrators of this cowardly act to justice».

The attack comes days after a Pakistani delegation visited Kabul to address the escalating violence along the border since the Taliban seized power in August 2021.
