Castillo reaffirms his intention to govern until the end of the legislature despite pressure from the opposition

The President of Peru, Pedro Castillo – ANDINA

The President of Peru, Pedro Castillo, has assured this Friday that anti-democratic attitudes and petty and subaltern interests «will not pass», reaffirming his intention to continue governing until the legislature runs out.

«I want to take the opportunity to address the country and point out that in the face of the pretension of some political sectors to try to break the will expressed at the polls, I ratify that nothing will prevent us from continuing at the helm of the nation until the last day of the Government, on July 28, 2026,» said the Peruvian president during a public event, as reported by RPP radio station.

Castillo has shown his confidence that the benches of the Congress, as well as the social forces, «will be on the side of governability», underlining his willingness to avoid anti-democratic attitudes.

In this sense, he has shown his willingness to seek dialogue with the opposition, as well as «the necessary consensus for Peru to move forward», underlining the recommendations of the preliminary report of the High Level Group of the Organization of American States (OAS) that was in Peru in November.

«Peruvians are tired of useless struggles that only harm the homeland and have prevented us from concentrating on the country’s real problems, the great gaps to be closed and the attention to the needs of deep Peru. Only unity makes us great», said the head of state in statements reported by Andina.

Castillo’s words come a day after the Congress admitted for debate the third motion of censure against him, which will take place on December 7.

In order to go ahead, the measure must obtain the favorable vote of at least 87 legislators, corresponding to two thirds of the chamber.

The first motion of vacancy presented against Castillo obtained the support of only 46 deputies and was not even debated in the plenary. The second attempt gathered 76 votes in favor, although in the final vote it could only gather 55 supports, far from the 87 needed.
