At least three people were killed and five others injured Monday in an explosion at an airfield near the Russian city of Ryazan, about 200 kilometers from the capital, Moscow.
Sources of the emergency services quoted by the Russian news agency TASS have pointed out that the event has resulted in five injured, two of whom are in serious condition, with no details about the causes of the event for the moment.
The Regional Hospital of Ryazan has confirmed that five people have been hospitalized following the explosion. «We have received five casualties following the explosion at the airfield near Ryazan,» hospital sources said.
Shortly before, Saratov region governor Roman Busargin had noted that an explosion had been recorded at an airfield in the area, with no casualties reported. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov confirmed that Russian President Vladimir Putin had been informed.
«Of course. The president regularly receives information from all relevant services about everything that happens,» said Peskov, who said he has «only seen the information in media,» according to the TASS agency. «I don’t have exact information, so I can’t comment,» he concluded.
For his part, Anton Gerashchenko, advisor to the Ukrainian Interior Ministry, has pointed out in a message on his account on the social network Twitter that the attack has been carried out with «cheap drones». «Another myth about ‘the world’s second army’ has been shattered,» he said.
«An airfield with strategic bombers that can carry nuclear weapons has been attacked with cheap drones. What is the Russian anti-aircraft defense doing?» he has wondered. Russia has so far not reacted to these statements from Kiev.
