The European Union welcomed on Monday the signing of the political agreement in Sudan between the Sudanese military authorities and the civilian coalition Forces for Freedom and Change (FFC) for a ‘framework agreement’ to relaunch the transition process, but called for consensus to be built around the pact and for more political actors to join in order to have a transitional civilian government.

In a statement, the EU High Representative for Foreign Policy, Josep Borrell, welcomed the agreement signed in Khartoum, showing his support for the mediation of the United Nations, the African Union and the Intergovernmental Authority on Development, stressing that now is the time to build on the momentum of this signature to extend the agreement to other actors.

«While the agreement is a living document and remains open for others to sign, there should be no room on the political spectrum for spoilers. It is now key to maintain the momentum of this process and for all actors to benefit from the agreement and redouble efforts to form a civilian and inclusive transitional government,» the head of diplomacy has pointed out, indicating that the horizon must be free, fair and credible elections within the timeframe agreed by the previous transition.

Borrell has emphasized the need to generate consensus around the agreement and has given as an example the release of prisoners in recent days. «There are others detained in similar circumstances and more gestures like this would help ensure that this agreement gains wider acceptance throughout the country,» he said.

The EU has insisted on its support for the democratic roadmap in the country, which was cut short in 2021 by the military coup led by the army chief and president of the Sovereign Transitional Council, Abdelfatá al Burhan, stressing that the cooperation agenda with Sudan can now begin to be revitalized.

«With today’s signature, preparatory work can begin on how to resume relations and cooperation whenever a transitional government and constitutional adjustments for the transitional period are agreed,» the communiqué of the EU diplomacy said.
