Mexican Foreign Minister Marcelo Ebrard announced on Wednesday that the Pacific Alliance summit, scheduled to be held on December 14 in Peru, has been suspended due to the censure motion passed against its president Pedro Castillo.

«Given the latest events in Peru, it has been agreed to postpone the Summit of the Pacific Alliance that was to take place on December 14 in the city of Lima. I will keep you informed,» he said on his official Twitter profile.

Ebrard also highlighted in another message on the same social network that «Mexico regrets the latest events in Peru». «It hopes for the respect for democracy and human rights for the good of this dear brotherly people,» he added.

The meeting of leaders of the group, which is composed of Colombia, Chile, Mexico and Peru, was to be held between November 24 and 25 in Mexico, but was suspended because Castillo could not leave Peru in the framework of the investigation against him for corruption.

Mexico was expected to hand over the pro tempore presidency it has held since 2018 and Costa Rica, Ecuador and Honduras were expected to join the group, founded in 2011.
