The President of the Spanish Government, Pedro Sánchez, and his French counterpart, Emmanuel Macron, will meet on January 19 to hold a bilateral Spanish-French summit, where they will sign the first Friendship Treaty between the two countries.
This has been confirmed by both leaders on their Twitter accounts, after meeting at the Euromediterranean Summit Euromed 9, which took place this Friday in Alicante and was attended by leaders from Spain, Portugal, France, Italy, Greece, Malta, Cyprus, Slovenia and Croatia.
The next Spanish-French summit, to be held in Spain on January 19, will result in the first Treaty of Friendship between the two countries, according to diplomatic sources. «We will continue to work together to boost the excellent relations that unite us,» Sanchez has highlighted on social networks, before welcoming Macron to Spain.
For his part, the top French leader has stressed that during the EU-MED 9 progress has been made «towards a greener and more independent Europe» and stressed, «We will continue to work together, dear Pedro.» «And because our countries have so much to share, our peoples have so much in common, we will see each other on January 19 in Spain to continue moving forward together,» he said.
Sanchez and Macron had planned to hold a bilateral meeting this Friday, between the two sessions of the EU-MED 9 summit, in which they were to address issues of mutual interest. Specifically, according to what had been specified from the Elysée, they were going to review bilateral relations and discuss some energy projects in the run-up to 2023. However, at the last minute this meeting has been cancelled, due to a matter of time and because the leaders’ agendas are full, according to Moncloa.
At the last summit between the two countries, which was held in Montauban (France) on March 15, 2021, Macron and Sánchez agreed on the Spanish-French nationality agreement, which came into force a year later, following the ratification procedures that the two States carried out as a matter of priority. The aim of this agreement was to take «a step forward in the friendship» between the two nations, which «strengthens the deep human ties between the Spanish and French peoples».
