The President of Senegal and of the African Union (AU), Macky Sall, has made a new call for a reduction of tensions and to achieve «a peace agreement» to end the war between Russia and Ukraine in order to «avoid suffering» around the world.
«I invite the President of Russia, Vladimir Putin, the President of Ukraine, Volodimir Zelenski, and all the heads of state of the countries involved in this crisis, to privilege the reduction of tensions for a peace agreement that will allow the world to avoid the suffering we are experiencing on the planet,» he said.
Sall, who made these statements in the framework of a speech for the celebration of the Muslim holiday of Eid al Adha, defended that «it is necessary to do everything possible and mobilize to stop the war in Ukraine», according to the Senegalese state news agency, APS.
Sall met with Putin in Moscow in June, after which he discussed in a call with Zelenski the situation arising from the war and its impact on the food supply chain, which is having a particularly harsh impact on developing countries.
Senegal currently holds the presidency of the African Union and was one of the countries invited to the G7 summit (the group of the world’s seven most industrialized countries) held in Germany at the end of June.
