U.S. President Joe Biden has congratulated Israel and Lebanon on the signing Thursday of the agreement that resolves the two countries’ dispute over their maritime border, confident that it will lay the groundwork for a «more stable and prosperous» region.

The United States has acted as mediator in these indirect negotiations for an agreement that Biden has described as «historic». «It will guarantee the interests of both Israel and Lebanon,» said the US president, in a statement in which he reiterated Washington’s willingness to continue to act as a «facilitator».

Energy resources in the disputed areas have been a key issue during the dialogue. Biden affirmed that energy «should not be a cause of conflict», but «a tool for cooperation, stability and prosperity».

«This agreement brings us closer to fulfilling a vision of a more secure, integrated and prosperous Middle East that benefits all citizens of the region,» he added.
