The Secretary of State for Northern Ireland, Chris Heaton-Harris, confirmed on Friday that an election has been called for the Northern Ireland Assembly, although he did not confirm the date of the vote.
The United Democratic Party (DUP) has lately focused its efforts on blocking the restoration of shared power in Northern Ireland, which after last May’s elections has the nationalist Sinn Féin as the most voted party.
The DUP and Sinn Féin have shown their marked disagreements in the last five months, especially regarding Brexit policies.
In view of the deadlock generated by the political parties, Westminster had set Friday night as the deadline for the restoration of the Government, according to the BBC.
The current legislation indicates that elections must be held within a maximum period of twelve weeks, although it is expected that the vote can finally be held on December 15.
