The U.S. State Department on Thursday congratulated Iraq for having succeeded in forming a new Executive after the country’s Parliament voted unanimously for the new government led by Iraqi Prime Minister Mohamed Shiaa al Sudani, ending the political deadlock in which the country has been mired since the October 2021 elections.
«The United States congratulates Prime Minister Mohamed Shiaa al Sudani on the formation of a new Iraqi Government. We look forward to working with him and his Executive on our shared interests,» explained Department spokesman Ned Price.
In this line, Price highlighted as mutual interests «the improvement of services for the Iraqi people to the guarantee of a secure, stable and sovereign Iraq».
«The Iraqi people deserve economic opportunities, an end to corruption and improved public services,» remarked the Department spokesman, who assured that Washington has welcomed the commitment of the current prime minister to put weapons under the control of the «official and legitimate institutions of the state.»
Likewise, the United States is willing to work with Baghdad to address respect for human rights, climate change or the improvement of economic opportunities. «Iraq has a partner in the U.S. as it moves forward with its reforms,» the Department said.
