U.S. President Joe Biden spoke by phone Monday with Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva to congratulate him on his narrow victory in Sunday’s election over Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro.

During the conversation, according to a White House press release, Biden praised «the strength of Brazil’s democratic institutions» in the context of the «free, fair and credible» elections.

«The two leaders discussed the strong U.S.-Brazil relationship and pledged to continue working as partners to address common challenges, including combating climate change, safeguarding food security, promoting inclusion and democracy, and managing regional migration,» he concluded.

Already after the results of the elections were known, the U.S. president, according to the White House in a short statement, conveyed his congratulations to the Brazilian president-elect, while also assuring his desire to cooperate with the Latin American country.

This Sunday Lula da Silva was elected as the new president of Brazil after beating Jair Bolsonaro in one of the last closest elections in recent memory in the South American giant. The leader of the Workers’ Party (PT) won two million more votes, 50.9 percent of them, than his rival, who more than half a day later has still not acknowledged his defeat.
