Brazil’s President Jair Bolsonaro on Tuesday did not openly pronounce himself on the result of the last elections in which the leftist candidate Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva won by a narrow margin, although he said he will comply with the Constitution.
After more than 24 hours of silence, Bolsonaro has begun his short speech, of about two minutes, thanking the Brazilian citizens for their vote, without naming his defeat, and speaking only of «following the Constitution» in the framework of the transfer of powers.
Bolsonaro, who has generated expectation for arriving late, has also explained that the road blockades are motivated «by the indignation» that the elections have provoked, and has said that they are «peaceful demonstrations».
After the president’s statement, the Minister of the Civil House, Ciro Nogueira, arrived at the podium and announced that he had been authorized by Bolsonaro to lead the transfer of power to his successor, whom he called «President Lula», as reported by the newspaper ‘O Globo’.
