Former British Health Minister Matt Hancock, a key figure in the Government during the worst moments of the COVID-19 pandemic, has been suspended as a Tory MP after his participation in the program ‘I’m A Celebrity…. Get Me Out of Here!’, a survival reality show where he will take part alongside other celebrities.

The Conservative Party has considered that the situation is «serious enough» to proceed with this suspension, under which Hancock will no longer represent his constituency of Westminster and will be free to go to Australia to live an experience with other public figures, such as singer Boy George.

Sources close to the former minister have played down the significance of this career turn, claiming that Hancock «does not expect to go back into government». In this sense, he hopes to use his time on the reality show and the program’s wide visibility — some twelve million viewers — to «promote his campaign on dyslexia,» according to the BBC.

Hancock resigned as health minister in June 2021 after it came to light that he had breached restrictions during the pandemic to get together with another woman with whom he allegedly had an extramarital affair.
