At least 110 people have died and more than 2.4 million have been affected by the passage of tropical storm ‘Nalgae’ through the Philippines, which has caused severe flooding and landslides.

By provinces, Maguindanao province has been the worst affected, with at least 51 fatalities in this southern region. In addition, more than 100 houses were destroyed by the storm, according to the national disaster agency.

Throughout the country, more than thirty people are missing, 16 of them in Maguindanao. Authorities have acknowledged that, at this stage, it is unlikely to find any survivors in the areas that have suffered the most damage since ‘Nalgae’ made landfall on Saturday.

Nalgae is gone, but the Philippines is now bracing for another storm to move in along the east coast and bring more rain, although forecasters expect the second storm, Banyan, to be downgraded to a tropical depression. The archipelago suffers an average of 20 tropical cyclones each year.
