UN Secretary General António Guterres has congratulated Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva on his victory in Brazil’s presidential elections, while waiting for any possible complaints about the results to be settled through «legal channels».

Guterres spoke on Monday with Lula, whom he already knew from their respective previous political stages, as the spokesman of the United Nations General Secretariat, Stephane Dujarric, recalled in a press conference.

Regarding the silence of the outgoing president, Jair Bolsonaro, who has not yet acknowledged his defeat, Dujarric avoided acknowledging a specific concern and reiterated the advice that the UN is sending to «all countries holding elections».

«We hope and want all those who do not agree with the election results to use the established constitutional and legal channels,» he explained to the media.
