Three conservative nationalist parties have reached a coalition agreement Thursday to form a government a month after parliamentary elections in which Prime Minister Krisjanis Karins’ New Unity was the most voted force, winning 26 seats in the Saeima.

Karins has counted on the support of two other conservative forces, the United List, which obtained fifteen seats; and the National Alliance, an extreme right-wing formation, which was the fourth most voted, obtaining thirteen deputies in those elections held on October 1.

The conservative coalition will have the necessary majority with 54 of the 100 seats that make up the Parliament. «Let’s continue our work,» Karins celebrated after signing the memorandum of understanding in Riga.

Karins’ New Unity is now expected to take seven ministries, including Finance, Foreign Affairs, Energy, Justice and Education; while the United List is expected to take four others, including Interior and Health. The same figure for the far-right National Alliance, which would have Defense and Economy, among others.

Although further discussions on the composition of the future government are scheduled for Friday, Karins believes that «it would be very difficult to divide the ministries in a fairer way than what is currently proposed», reports the newspaper ‘Diena’.
