The chief of staff of Brazil’s president, Jair Bolsonaro, has appointed the ‘number two’ of the future president, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, as Special Charge of Government Transition, thus initiating a process that will formally conclude next January 1 with the transfer of the presidential sash in the South American giant.

Bolsonaro’s chief of staff, Ciro Nogueira, has assumed in recent days the coordination of this process, which started early Friday morning with the publication of the appointment of the vice-president-elect, Geraldo Alckmin, in the Official Gazette of the Union.

«Good morning. Let’s work on the transition for a better future for all,» Lula posted on his Twitter account, along with an image illustrating the appointment.

Alckim and Nogueira already held the first meeting at the Planalto Palace on Thursday, two days after Bolsonaro publicly pledged to abide by the Constitution and cede power to Lula. The outgoing president avoided clearly acknowledging his defeat in Sunday’s elections, the closest in Brazil’s history.
