German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier on Friday urged North Korean authorities to immediately stop ballistic tests during his visit to South Korea, where he met with his counterpart Yoon Suk Yeol.

Steinmeier pointed out after his talks with Yoon in Seoul, the South Korean capital, that «unprecedented» tests have been conducted since the beginning of this year, something which has led to an increase in tension on the Korean peninsula. This is in addition to the numerous launches carried out in recent days.

According to the South Korean government, North Korea has fired more than 30 missiles since Wednesday, including an intercontinental missile capable of carrying a nuclear warhead. «This escalation is unacceptable and the Pyongyang regime is solely responsible for it,» the German president has maintained.

He pointed out that North Korea’s latest missile tests «violate UN Security Council resolutions and endanger international security».

Steinmeier called on North Korea to «implement these measures» and «start serious negotiations» on the dismantling of the country’s nuclear missile program.

In this sense, he affirmed that Germany respects the «tireless» efforts made by South Korea to achieve the resumption of negotiations with the aim of denuclearizing North Korea and has conveyed its support to Seoul.
