UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Türk has urged Twitter’s new owner Elon Musk to ensure that Human Rights are central to the management and development of the platform, after all members of the team in this area were fired following his takeover.
Similarly, the UN representative recalled that he has also dispensed with all the staff involved in ethical artificial intelligence, with the exception of two people, which he stressed is «not an encouraging start».
Türk has recalled this Saturday in a letter that the entrepreneur has «enormous responsibilities» in this field due to the «influential role of the platform as a digital space», so he must understand the harms associated with the social network and take steps to address them.
It has also called on Musk to protect freedom of expression, avoid amplifying content that harms the rights and privacy of others, and ensure that Twitter does not incite «discrimination, hostility or violence.»
In the letter, he also highlighted the advantages and opportunities of the platform, which, he said, «has much to offer our common agenda for a common world», although he pointed out that they must be clear in the requirements to make it a reality.
