The president of El Salvador, Nayib Bukele, has defended this Sunday the destruction of graves of gang members killed by his government, assuring that it is a way to put an end to the memory and symbols of the gangs.

«Destroying the gangs that were so deeply rooted in Salvadoran society is not an easy job; in fact, it was always thought to be impossible,» said the Salvadoran president in a message on the social network Twitter.

Bukele stressed that destroying the gangs requires «simultaneous actions,» arguing that it is not enough to arrest the gang members, but that it is also necessary to destroy their symbols.

One of the ways to achieve this, according to El Salvador’s president, is by destroying their «sense of belonging and memory» by destroying the graves of former gang members or erasing graffiti from the streets.

In this sense, the Salvadoran head of state has disseminated a video in which workers are seen hitting the tombs of dozens of deceased, a task he has defended: «Those responsible for destroying the graves of gang members are all prisoners, making up for a little of the damage they did to society».
