The NGO World Vision has condemned Monday the attacks perpetrated by Syrian government forces against several camps for displaced people in the province of Idlib, in the northwest of the country, which have resulted in at least nine deaths and dozens of wounded.

In a statement, the organization has indicated that among the fatalities there is a woman and two children and regretted the «tragic loss of life» due to the bombings.

It pointed out that the affected area includes more than twenty camps supported by various NGOs. «The latest information received by our teams on the ground indicates that at least 75 people have been injured, 63 tents have been destroyed and more than 2,100 families have been displaced due to the violence,» the text states.

World Vision has warned that conditions are already «extremely harsh in overcrowded camps where Syrian families continue to struggle to find decent shelter, access to clean water and ways to warm themselves for the winter».

In this regard, he stressed that the educational centers were closed at the time of the attacks, so no children were injured in these centers.

Johan Mooij, director of the NGO’s humanitarian response in Syria, said that displaced people living in tents «should not be targeted for anything other than humanitarian assistance».

He called on all parties involved in the conflict to «fulfill their responsibilities under international law and stop the violence against the civilian population».

«All too often, these indiscriminate attacks result in the loss of education for children, serious injury to victims and loss of life,» he lamented.

SYRIAN OPPOSITION WARNS OF CONSEQUENCES The National Coalition for Syrian Opposition and Revolutionary Forces has for its part warned of the consequences to the escalation of violence against civilians in the country.

«The regime of Bashar al-Assad has carried out new bloody attacks against displaced civilians by shelling camps in rural western Idlib,» they warned in a brief note.

It has also warned that this is an «attack that constitutes a war crime» and called for an urgent meeting of the UN Security Council to take «punitive measures against the perpetrators of these attacks» against the Syrian population.
