Polling stations in the United States have begun to close their doors on Tuesday on the East Coast, after a mid-term election day in which the Democratic Party seeks to maintain its majority in both houses of Congress in the face of the last two years of President Joe Biden’s term in office.
The first voting stations have begun to close at 18.00 local time (00.00 Spanish peninsular time), in some districts of Indiana and Kentucky.
In-person voting began at noon after more than 45 million people had cast early ballots in at least 47 states.
The state of Texas has registered the highest number of early votes, with more than 5.4 million, followed by Florida, with more than 4.9 million, and California, with more than 4.7 ballots, according to data provided by Edison Research and Catalyst.
The number of ballots cast before the official opening of the polls in the United States will continue to increase as election officials update the vote-by-mail tally, according to CNN.
