The Democratic Party has won a majority in the Michigan state Senate for the first time in 40 years, guaranteeing control of the House of Representatives and also the state governor’s seat after Tuesday’s elections.

«We’ve done it, Michigan. Since 1984 Republicans have used control of the Michigan Senate to block what Michigan families needed. They won’t do it anymore,» the Democratic Party’s Michigan chapter noted.

The Democratic Party had not held a majority in both state houses since 1982. Republicans had a majority in the state House of Representatives since 2008.

In addition, everything points to the outgoing governor, Gretchen Whitmer, a Democrat, revalidating the office after defeating the Republican candidate and Donald Trump supporter Tudor Dixon.

«The Republicans had everything in their favor: a record collection for the campaign and a favorable environment in the midterm with a Democratic president,» said a spokeswoman for the Democratic Legislative Campaign Committee, Jessica Post, quoted by the local press.

In addition, voters have approved, according to projections, to raise the right to abortion to the level of the state Constitution, thus repealing the strict legislation on abortion in force since 1931 but suspended since 1973.
