Former U.S. President Donald Trump on Wednesday described as «quite disappointing» the outcome of the midterm elections held on Tuesday, although he stressed that he considers them a personal success.
«In some ways yesterday’s elections were quite disappointing, but from my personal point of view it was a great victory. 219 VICTORIES and 16 defeats overall. Who has ever done better?», Trump said in a message posted on the social network Truth Social.
The Republican Party is close to regaining the majority in the House of Representatives, but the outcome in the Senate is yet to be decided, data quite far from what polls and analysts were predicting as a Republican «wave».
In fact, in the tightest contests, Trump-backed candidates have been defeated and have only prevailed clearly in constituencies where the outcome was already clear well in advance.
The defeat in Pennsylvania is particularly serious for Trump. There, the famous physician Mehmet Oz failed to win a Senate seat despite the former president’s endorsement.
In Georgia Herschel Walker will have to go to a runoff in the Senate race and in Arizona the recount continues and the Democratic candidate for governor is ahead of Trump’s bet, Kari Lake.
Who did win a clear victory is Ron DeSantis, re-elected as governor of Florida. DeSantis is Trump’s clearest rival in the race for the GOP nomination in the 2024 presidential election.
