Ukrainian authorities on Wednesday announced the «neutralization» of a team of the Russian Federal Security Service (FSB) who were preparing to assassinate commanders of the Ukrainian Army’s special operations forces.
The Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) has indicated in a message on its Telegram account that the operation has been carried out by the Counterintelligence Department and added that the arrests have taken place in the capital Kiev and in the Sumy region.
«It has been determined that the saboteurs inspected the points of deployment and movement of Ukrainian troops in the capital and in border areas in the northeast of our country,» he has said, before highlighting that «one of their main tasks was to collect personal information and location of commanders of combat units of the Special Operations Forces.»
In this regard, he explained that «the aggressor planned to use this information to prepare physical liquidation of Ukrainian defenders and destruction of their weapons and military equipment», before pointing directly to the FSB as responsible for the cell’s operations.
Finally, the SBU noted that the operations resulted in the seizure of anti-tank mines, grenades and a Kalashnikov assault rifle, as well as computers and cell phones «with evidence of conspiratorial correspondence with a representative of the FSB».
