U.S. President Joe Biden does not believe that the conflict in Ukraine will be resolved until Russian President Vladimir Putin’s troops return to his country.
Speaking to the press just before leaving for the COP27 climate summit, the US president shared his vision of a possible end to the war in Ukraine, although he was not hopeful.
«I don’t think the conflict can be resolved until (Russian President Vladimir) Putin leaves Ukraine,» Biden said, hinting that a possible negotiation between Russia and Ukraine to end the hostilities will not happen until the Russian army stops attacking Ukraine.
However, US diplomacy has privately asked the Ukrainian government to leave open the possibility of negotiating a peace agreement with Russia in order to convince allied countries that the war in Ukraine is not festering and that there is an exit option, sources close to the negotiations told ‘The Washington Post’.
However, the US government has also conveyed to Kiev its conviction that none of Russia’s offers to negotiate have any credibility given its exaggerated demands, which virtually amount to unconditional surrender and implicit recognition of Russian sovereignty over the Ukrainian territories it has incorporated.
