Taiwan authorities on Monday applauded the commitment expressed by U.S. President Joe Biden to the island’s ‘status quo’ following his meeting with his Chinese counterpart, Xi Jinping, on the sidelines of the G20 summit being held in Bali, Indonesia.

Xavier Chang, spokesman for Taiwanese President Tsai Ing Wen, highlighted Biden’s position on the possibility of facilitating a change of policy towards the island and expressed that Taiwan «appreciates» this decision, as reported by the ‘Taipei Times’ newspaper.

He described the US policy as «consistent» and noted that «any change without Taiwan’s approval would undermine security in the region». «It shows that peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait is a common hope for the international community,» he said.

«Taiwan will continue its efforts to ensure stability and peace in the region with like-minded partners,» he said.

Earlier Monday, Biden ruled out that there is an «imminent risk» of an attack by China against Taiwan despite rising tensions in the area and clarified that his intention is to «see how issues in the Taiwan Strait are resolved peacefully.»
