United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres has expressed «great concern» over reports of a missile explosion on Tuesday on Polish territory, in Przewodow, near the Ukrainian border, which has taken the lives of two citizens.

The deputy spokesman for the secretary general, Farhan Haq, has indicated that Guterres has sent his condolences to the families of the victims, while urging «a thorough investigation» into the incident to clarify who is responsible for the missiles.

In addition, the UN Secretary General has expressed that «it is absolutely essential to avoid an escalation of the war in Ukraine».

The Polish authorities confirmed on Tuesday evening the death of two people as a result of an explosion. However, they refused to accuse Russia, as Ukraine and the Baltic countries have ventured to do.

Polish President Andrzej Duda said he had no conclusive evidence as to who was behind the missile launch. «Investigations are ongoing. Most likely it was a Russian-made rocket,» he told the media.

He also called for calm and informed that the Polish authorities are working together with their allies: «Polish soldiers are on the scene. The support of the allies is there and the commitments are being fulfilled», said the country’s leader.
