The Ukrainian Parliament on Wednesday approved a new extension of martial law and the mobilization of the Armed Forces, until February 2023, which would mark the first anniversary of the military offensive launched by Russia this year.

The proposal has gone ahead by a large majority and implies that the two measures, first introduced in the early hours of February 24, 2022, shortly after Russian President Vladimir Putin gave the order to invade the neighboring country, will be in force until February 19, according to UNIAN agency.

In the case of martial law, it expands the army’s room for maneuver and allows it to restrict freedoms considered fundamental, such as the right to demonstrate, in the interests of national security.

It will be the fifth extension, the third consecutive 90-day extension, and its extension does not in itself represent any surprise, given that circumstances on the ground have not changed. In fact, Ukraine suffered on Tuesday the largest coordinated missile attack since the invasion broke out.
