A man armed with a sword and an axe was detained Thursday by security personnel at the building of the U.S. newspaper ‘The New York Times’ after he asked to speak to several journalists.

A spokesman for the New York Police Force explained in statements picked up by the NBC network that the person wanted to enter the editorial office of the famous newspaper, located in Manhattan, to talk to unidentified people from the newspaper.

After being detained by the building’s security personnel, the man surrendered his weapons without incident and was held until the arrival of the police. He was later taken to a hospital for evaluation.

The incident comes at a time when journalists have increasingly become the target of violence in the United States in recent years.

On the day of the assault on Capitol Hill on January 6, 2021, several journalists were assaulted while working. And, most recently, a Las Vegas city elected official has been accused of allegedly stabbing a female journalist to death after she wrote articles critical of him, ‘The Hill’ has reported.
