Iran warns that IAEA Board resolution against it will affect its nuclear cooperation

The Iranian government has condemned a resolution passed against it by some countries on the Board of Governors of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), warning in turn that it will affect the process of resolving technical problems with the UN nuclear agency.

Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Nasser Kanaani has described as «unacceptable» the measure approved by the United States, the United Kingdom, France and Germany criticizing the Middle Eastern country’s lack of cooperation with the UN nuclear agency’s investigation into traces of uranium in at least three of its facilities, IRNA news agency reported.

According to Kanaani, the four countries’ proposal came as a delegation from the Iranian nuclear agency has been negotiating with the IAEA in recent weeks to «find practical solutions to complicated and technical safeguards problems.»

Therefore, the Iranian Executive has denounced the attempt by the four Western countries to «take advantage of recent situations» and exert more pressure on the country, facts that «will negatively affect the process of resolving technical problems by the UN nuclear agency».

In this regard, the Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman called on the member countries of the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) – comprising 120 countries from Africa, Asia, Latin America, the Caribbean and Europe – to vote against the resolution and to express their position «openly».

However, Iran has indicated it is committed to «a comprehensive safeguards agreement» as well as to continued cooperation with the IAEA under such an agreement.

The resolution against Iran has been supported by 26 of the 35 members that make up the IAEA Board. China and Russia have opposed the measure, while at least five countries have abstained, according to Bloomberg.
