The President of Peru, Pedro Castillo, meets with the OAS High-Level mission – OEA

The High Level Mission of the Organization of American States (OAS) that is visiting Peru to analyze the political situation in the country has described as sincere and transparent the meetings held on Monday with the different powers of the State.

The spokesman of the OAS High Level Group in Peru, the former Paraguayan Foreign Minister Eladio Loizaga, has assured to have had a «very sincere, very open and transparent» dialogue with all the groups with which the mission has met, as detailed in statements to the media.

«We have had a very sincere, open and transparent dialogue with all those with whom we have met. We will submit a report to the Permanent Council of the OAS in due time, and from there we will be able to know the conclusions,» Loizaga said.

During the day on Monday, the High Level Mission of the Inter-American organization held meetings with different actors of Peruvian politics, who shared their vision of the democratic situation facing the country at a time of tension between the Executive and the Congress and part of the Judiciary.

The High Level group, formed by five foreign ministers, three deputy foreign ministers and the representative of the OAS Secretary General, first met with the President of Peru, Pedro Castillo, as well as with his Prime Minister, Aníbal Torres, and his Foreign Minister, César Landa.

Later, the mission met with the representatives of the Congress, President José Williams Zapata, as well as with the three vice-presidents of the Parliament, with whom they had a «frank and open» conversation.

It also met with the president of the Supreme Court of Justice and with representatives of the Constitutional Court and the Attorney General’s Office.

Finally, the High Level Group met with the parliamentary groups, formed by eight blocks, with whom the organization took the opportunity to dispel doubts about its visit.

In mid-October, the OAS Permanent Council decided to send a high-level delegation to Peru to conduct an analysis of the political situation in the Andean country at the request of President Castillo himself.

The Peruvian Executive formally requested the organization to activate Articles 17 and 18 of the Democratic Charter with which the organization may provide assistance when «the government of a member state considers that its democratic political institutional process or its legitimate exercise of power is at risk».
