Hundreds of workers at U.S. company Apple’s main iPhone manufacturing plant in China have clashed with security personnel amid tensions over tough restrictions imposed over a recent outbreak of COVID-19.

The protest by Foxconn Technology Group workers began in the early hours of Wednesday after clashing with guards over unpaid wages and fears of the spread of the coronavirus infection, Bloomberg agencies reported.

Several workers have been injured as a result of the protests. Riot police have arrived at the scene of the incidents with the aim of restoring order.

The company, for its part, has declined to comment on the incident.

The factory, which employs more than 200,000 workers, has been closed since October, leaving many of its employees isolated, although some fled the plant on foot last month.
