The Chilean government has invoked the security law on Wednesday to deal with the strike of truck drivers who continue to disrupt the operation of highways, after rejecting the Executive’s proposal to end the stoppage.

The Minister of Interior and Security, Carolina Tohá, has confirmed that they have taken the decision to criminally prosecute -through the State Security Law- the truckers who maintain the blockades in several points of the country.

«It is not acceptable, we will not tolerate it. That is why the Government has decided that it is going to invoke the State Security Law, as it corresponds in cases like this. The decision has already been taken», explained the minister, according to statements reported by ‘BioBioChile’.

«In all these hours several additional efforts have been sustained, instead of advancing towards a solution to this problem, what some of the groups that signed the agreement have done, is to raise new demands, demands totally disproportionate to the reality of the country», she has detailed.

Tohá has recalled that this Monday an agreement was made that contained «very significant» measures, with concrete answers to several demands raised. «The government has made every effort to avoid this conflict,» he said.

The Confederation of Transporters Force of the North of the country began this Monday an indefinite strike in protest against high fuel prices, as well as insecurity on the roads, after three months ago the truckers asked the Minister of Finance to put an end to the price hikes.
